“Take My Hand Part 3”

PANEL 1

OPEN ON interior of OLE’ HAND as it drifts in a tight turn. FREDDIE looks in the rear view mirror as he turns the wheel hard to the left. The front windshield is filled with the outline and headlights from a demolition derby car heading straight at him. Through the passenger side window the MONSTER TRUCK can be seen closing in fast.

PANEL 2

OLE’ HAND’s rear view mirror showing LORENE GOODFAITH sitting in the backseat looking straight ahead and smiling at FREDDIE. Another derby car looms large in the rear window behind her.

FREDDIE:

What the..?!

PANEL 3

View from high above showing that the two demolition derby cars have smashed into each other after failing to match OLE’ HAND’s dynamic turn. The MONSTER TRUCK zooms towards the two stalled cars still in pursuit.

SOUND (DERBY CAR CRASH):

CRASHH!!!

PANEL 4

View of the interior of OLE’ HAND looking in through the front windshield. FREDDIE looks into the rear view mirror his mouth hanging open in disbelief. LORENE’S APPARITION sits smiling in the backseat behind him.

Note: When LORENE appears in OLE’ HAND’S rear view mirror she looks as she did when she was alive. LORENE’S APPARITION is her ghostly form. It is used for shots outside the mirror and can’t be seen by anyone but the reader, but she can be heard by FREDDIE and some others in this form.

LORENE:

Good job boy! Stunt drivin’ is in your genes.

Your daddy picked it up real fast too.

PANEL 5

The MONSTER TRUCK, with MAD PREACHER behind the wheel looking maniacal, driving over and crushing the stalled demolition cars.

SOUND (MONSTER TRUCK):

CRUUUUSSH!!.

PANEL 6

Overhead shot of OLE’ HAND with the MONSTER TRUCK close behind.

FREDDIE:

OH SHIT!

LORENE:

Don’t you cuss at me boy!

PANEL 7

Interior of OLE’ HAND. FREDDIE looks into the rear view mirror as he talks. LORENE’S APPARITION can be seen behind him in the back seat.

FREDDIE:

HOLY SHIT!

I’m dead! I’m dead.. I’m seeing crazy shit because I”M DEAD!

PANEL 8

LORENE:

You ain’t dead Fredrick!

And you ain’t going to die either. Not as long as you drive like a GOODFAITH!

PANEL 9

COYOTE and UNCLE BUD stand next to UNCLE BUD’S truck. COYOTE is holding a knife in one hand and a jar of shine in the other. UNCLE BUD is wiping sweat from his forehead with a red bandana. 

UNCLE BUD:

Man! What’s got into Pastor Montgomery? He’s like a rabid dog!

COYOTE:

You thinking what I’m thinking?

UNCLE BUD:

That he needs to be put down?

PANEL 10

COYOTE and UNCLE BUD still standing next to the truck. Focus is on the jar of shine which now has COYOTE’S knife stabbed through the lid.

COYOTE:

Give me your bandana.

UNCLE BUD:

What!? Where’s your bandana!? This one was a present from my Softie!

Oh man! Not the shine!

PANEL 11

Side view of OLE’HAND exiting the corral by crashing through a wooden fence. FREDDIE’S arms are straight, his elbows locked, and he has a white knuckle grip on the steering wheel. His eyes are wide and he is screaming. LORENE’S APPARITION sits calmly in the back seat.

FREDDIE:

Ahhhhh!!!

PANEL 12

OLE’ HAND in a hard turn onto the main drag of the fair; food trucks and game tents on both sides. 

PANEL 13

FREDDIE turning the wheel and looking in the rear view mirror. HIs eyes are wide and his jaw is clenched. Drops of sweat hang above his brow.

FREDDIE:

Shit! Shit! Shit!

PANEL 14

Inside OLE’ HAND. FREDDIE has his head turned and he is looking at an empty back seat.

FREDDIE:

Fuck! I’m losing it.

Get it together dude!

PANEL 15

Mirror shot showing the reflection of LORENE looking into the mirror with a comforting expression.

LORENE:

Child, I’m real and I’m here to help. I’ll explain later.

Take the next right to head towards the raceway.

PANEL 16

Interior shot of OLE’ HAND’S front console focus is on the CB radio.

UNCLE BUD (via CB radio):

Listen up little buddy!

Lead him into the raceway!

FREDDIE:

…uuhhh..

PANEL 17

MONSTER TRUCK with MAD PREACHER at the wheel driving through a game tent, fish bowls, rings, and stuffed animals fly through the air. OLE’ HAND is just in front of it headed towards a sign that says Raceway.

PANEL 18

Windshield in view of the interior of OLE’ HAND. FREDDIE is looking into the rear view mirror talking to LORENE. LORENE’S APPARITION can be seen behind him in the backseat.

FREDDIE:

Re-Re! How are you here!?

LORENE:

God’s will, I reckon.

‘Still have work to do.

PANEL 19

OLE’ HAND speeding into the raceway with the MONSTER TRUCK close behind.

THE RACEWAY
A dirt racetrack bordered by hay bales. In the center of the infield there is ramp leading to a line of junk cars; props for the MONSTER TRUCK show. A crate of moonshine, a gas can, and a big box labeled ‘FIREWORKS’ has been placed on the roof of the center car.

PANEL 20

View from behind of OLE’ HAND and MONSTER TRUCK heading around the dirt track.

UNCLE BUD (via CB):

Take him around the track. Then, cut into the infield and head up the ramp.

Now Freddie.. Listen up. MAKE SURE you punch it so you clear the cars!

You don’t want to land halfway. Believe you me.

PANEL 21

Side view of OLE’ HAND. FREDDIE sweats as he grips the wheel tight. He looks scared. LORENE sits calmly in the back seat.

FREDDIE:

What?! Ramp?! Clear the cars?!!

LORENE:

That’s right. You heard the man!

PANEL 22

Interior shot. FREDDIE sweats as he grips the wheel tight. His head is turned looking at the ramp and the line of junk cars as he drives by. He is scared. LORENE sits calmly in the back seat.

FREDDIE:

That’s got to be at least 50 feet! I’ll never make it!

LORENE:

Have a little faith boy! You’ll make it. Your granddaddy built this car. That means its special. ‘Means your special too.

PANEL 23

Close up of LORENE’S APPARITION sitting in the back seat talking to FREDDIE.

LORENE:

I know you don’t remember much about him being that he was called back home when you was still a child. But, he was extraordinary.

Really something! Like no one else on Earth.

PANEL 24

Close up of FREDDIE looking out at the road ahead with a steely gaze look of determination and responding to LORENE.

FREDDIE:

Well.. I remember he was a gifted grease monkey. And this car sure has some get up and go.

Let’s see what you’ve got Ole’ Hand!

PANEL 25

FREDDIE’S right hand shifting OLE’ HANDS gearshift into 4th gear. There is a white aura around his hand on the shifter.

PANEL 26

COYOTE lighting UNCLE BUD’S red bandana, which is now sticking out of a jar of moonshine, using his worn black zippo lighter. He is standing near the ramp. OLE’ HAND and the MONSTER TRUCK are heading towards him.

PANEL 27

Close up of FREDDIE through the windshield. He is screaming. LORENE’S APPARITION can be seen over his shoulder in the backseat.

LORENE:

Stomp it child!

FREDDIE:

Ahhhhh!

PANEL 28

FREDDIE’S foot pushing OLE’ HAND’S gas pedal down to the floor.

PANEL 29

Side view of OLE’ HAND flying over the cars as the MONSTER TRUCK heads up the ramp behind.

SOUND (ENGINES ROARING):

RROOOOOMMMM!!

PANEL 30

OLE’ HAND landing on the ramp beyond the line of junk cars. The MONSTER TRUCK has landed on the middle car right as COYOTE’S Molotov cocktail lands on the pile of explosives causing it to erupt in a ball of flames.

SOUND (EXPLOSION):

BOOOM!!!

PANEL 31

FREDDIE looking into the rear view mirror. In the mirror LORENE is turned around in the backseat looking out of the rear window at the MONSTER TRUCK that is out of commission and engulfed in flames.

LORENE:

Get out there and save that preacher boy!

FREDDIE:

What!?

PANEL 32

Closeup of LORENE now facing FREDDIE in the mirror. She wears a frank and earnest expression.

LORENE:

You heard me!

Save him! Go on! Get!

PANEL 33

FREDDIE dragging the MAD PREACHER away from the MONSTER TRUCK wreckage as COYOTE and UNCLE BUD spray it with fire extinguishers. 

PANEL 34

FREDDIE kneels on the ground next to the singed and smoking MAD PREACHER. The MAD PREACHER’S eyes are open wide and his mouth is stuck in a grotesque smile. LORENE’S APPARITION has the backseat window down and is sticking her head out in the background.

LORENE:

Go on! Save him boy!

FREDDIE:

What do you mean? I did.

PANEL 35

LORENE:

Not yet you haven’t! Put your hand on his forehead!

PANEL 36

FREDDIE kneeling next to the MAD PREACHER staring at his hand. His hand is encompassed in a golden light.

FREDDIE:

What the fu..

PANEL 37

MAD PREACHER sitting up off the ground and holding FREDDIE’s shoulders with a murderous look in his eye. FREDDIE is startled. (MAD PREACHER has sat up suddenly and grabbed FREDDIE’S shoulders while FREDDIE was distracted by his glowing hand).

MAD PREACHER:

BURN SINNER!!

FREDDIE:

AHHH!

LORENE (FROM OUT OF FRAME):

Save him!!

PANEL 38

FREDDIE on top of MAD PREACHER. His left hand is on MAD PREACHER’S shoulder holding him to the ground. His glowing right hand is pressed against his forehead. MAD PREACHER’S head is bent back and his eyes are rolled back in his head. A ring of white light bursts out of the point of contact between FREDDIE and MAD PREACHER (HOLY SAVE VISUAL EFFECT).

SOUND (HOLY SAVE):

Halllleeeluujaaaahhhh!

PANEL 39

COYOTE and UNCLE BUD stand next to FREDDIE as he looks at his hand with an expression of bewilderment. The now normal looking PREACHER is laying on the ground with his eyes closed and a peaceful look on his face.

UNCLE BUD:

Would you look at that!

Sleeping like a baby.

FREDDIE:

I.. I.. Re Re said…

My hand.. it.. it..

COYOTE:

We saw.

PANEL 40

Aerial shot of the damage to the fairground. Members of the Holly Springs Baptist Church CONGREGATION wander dazed and confused. Smoke billows from the flaming MONSTER TRUCK. FREDDIE, COYOTE, and UNCLE BUD are still standing over the now sleeping PREACHER. Two police cars and a fire truck are speeding towards the raceway.
